Last Week of Budget Requests

Uncategorized No Comments »

Dear Trinity College Student Body,

This week, Monday, March 29th 2010 will be the last day that the Budget Committee will be hearing requests to fund events for two reasons: First reason being that next week, we will be starting end of the year reviews of all clubs that have received more than $500 in operating budgets from the SGA. These reviews tend to be a very long, through, and tedious process so there will really be no time to hear budget requests. Secondly and perhaps most importantly, it appears that the Budget Committee will be running out of money after this week in any case. So, if you have last minute requests, please fill out the budget request form found under the Finance tab of this website and send them into budgetcommittee@yahoo.com ASAP. Thank you and I hope that you all had an excellent spring break.

Switch to Google Apps from Microsoft Exchange?

Academic Affairs Committee 3 Comments »

Something that caught my eye recently was this post over at one of the many Google blogs, outlining a new tool Google developed to migrate email, calendar, and contact data from Exchange to Google Apps. In the library’s recent 14 Days comment system, I left a note mentioning how I would like to see the college transition from an email system based around Microsoft Exchange to one based on Google Apps. This new tool seems like the perfect way to do that. Google Apps is free and I believe a superior product. The Computing Center ought to look immediately into making this transition, especially with all of the other cost-saving measures the Administration has enacted or is considering.

Trivia?!

Academic Affairs Committee 1 Comment »

Hello Trinity students,

The Academic Affairs committee of the SGA has been very active this year making Trin better with the course evaluations, the registrar’s forms in Mather, and ISBN numbers.  We would to continue to make academics fun and exciting by organizing Interdepartmental Trivia night among different departments.  This would mean that different majors would form teams and compete in a trivia competition.  We are thinking that it would be an evening affair and that professors would also be part of the game.

However,  we would like to know if students would be interested in something like this before going through with concrete plans.  We welcome all feedback, comments, concerns, questions, and ideas for a Trivia Night.  Please let us know so that we can make this happen for you!

The Library wants your COMMENTS!

If I even needed another reason to love the library, here it is: “14 Days to Have Your Say!” Starting today, Sunday, February 14th until Saturday, February 27th, students will have the opportunity to enter a conversation about what they love, hate, and wish the Library had. The initiative is headed by amazing Music & Media Librarian, Amy Harrell, 4 Librarians, and 2 members from Information Technology. For once, don’t be afraid to use your outside voice in the Library…because the Library is listening! Visit http://14days.trincoll.edu to enter comments. Please remember to add CMPCNTR\ before your username when signing in. If you would prefer to remain anonymous, you can even drop off your comment in the designated boxes in Mather and the Library.

Post Scriptum: If you have not already, follow the Library on Twitter at twitter.com/trinitylibrary to get all the amazing updates that occur at the Library!

I <3 Academics

Academic, Uncategorized 1 Comment »

If you do not know me that well, I love the people at the Library. It is really surprising that a lot of the great features that we use on a daily basis are developed and maintained by librarians for students. I just wanted to inform you of some cool tech that is in the Library that you probably do not know about.

1. A mobile-friendly version of the library web site is now available at http://library.trincoll.edu/m You can also access it by clicking on the “Mobile-friendly” link at the top of our the library web site. The mobile version of the library’s web site is designed for viewing and navigating on the smaller screens of cell phones and other mobile devices. It includes just a few of the primary functions of the main web site.

2. If you are using a computer to access the Library’s catalog, and can never remember the books you wanted, the Library now has a quick and easy solution. TEXT MESSAGE! If you find the book you want in the Library’s Catalog, you go to the right-hand column under “ACTIONS” and select “Text me the title and call #.” VOILA! You instantly receive a text message with the Title and how to find it in the Library. It is like Christmas Morning for any academic junkie like myself.

New Textbooks at the Library

Uncategorized No Comments »

Are you taking a class in Chemistry, Economics, Language & Culture Studies, or Psychology and are required to buy a textbook that costs more than $100? Check the Library’s course reserves to see if a copy is available for you in the Library. To see if your textbook is available on reserve: go to the library catalog’s course reserve tab, for Instructor choose Textbook Reserves, for Course choose Any, then click Search. Alternatively, you can search the catalog by the title of the textbook.

reserve

All textbooks purchased for this project will be on reserve as long as they are used for a course. Reserve books can be borrowed for 2 hours at a time.

The project was initiated by the SGA’s Academic Affairs together with the Dean of Faculty’s Office and the Library. Its goal is to provide students with an alternative to buying expensive study material for their classes. During the spring semester, the :ibrary will evaluate the project and hopefully extend it to all departments in fall of 2010. If you have any comments or questions about it, please send them to library-feedback@trincoll.edu or terrence.reillyii@trincoll.edu
