Wireless in the Library

Oct 9, 2008   //   by Krystal Ramirez   //   Official SGA Post  //  3 Comments

The SGA has received numerous complaints from students about the lack of wireless access recently in the library, and we have, in fact, contacted the IT Department (we spoke with Bryan Adams, the Director of Systems and Networking) and they suggest that students open a help desk ticket whenever any incidents occur, because without them, there is no way to pinpoint the problem and resolve the issue. They have not noticed anything wrong with the system, and therefore need the specifics and details in order to be able to address any concerns. The phone number to call is 860-297-2007, or pay a visit to the Computing Center on Level B of the library.

  • I was in the library today and the wireless did not work. My computer would connect to the wireless router but the internet would not work.

Did they open a ticket when the SGA called them?

  • They know there is a problem, but it is still important to make individual complaints. This will help them figure out where the problems are, realize the magnitude, and take more swift action to fix the deficiencies.

  • No, a ticket was not entered. The reason there was no ticket entered is that there was no information we could work on. While we believe some students cannot get access to the wireless in the library, it is not true that ALL students cannot. In fact, presently, there are no tickets about this issue at all. What is needed is for a person having this problem to go to the helpdesk with the laptop in question and seek help. Then, information such as what wireless network is problematic? (Trinair or Guest) and where were they when this failure occurred? (What area of the library.) What is the MAC address of their wireless NIC? (The helpdesk can help you determine this.) And is this a registered MAC address. (Again, the helpdesk can advise here.

I have determined that some users are having difficulty with teh certificate that is needed to connect to TrinAir. The helpdesk knows how to help users reset their certificates, and/or how to advise them to accept any certificate that ends with “trincoll.edu.”

So, in short, I believe there is a problem for some users, but reports and detail must be provided to the helpdesk for us to proceed.

    Thanks,

    Bryan
