The Future of this Site

Feb 24, 2008   //   by Christopher Gardner   //   Senator Post  //  2 Comments

Today I had a very interesting conversation with Nathan Kirschbaum regarding the future of this website and the role it will play in SGA affairs. Personally I think the website is great and it will make what we do more accessible to the student body. However I think it will take time before the site reaches its potential. Nathan is of the belief that if the SGA fully embraces the site, it will be revolutionary almost immediately. To this end the Elections and Recruitment Committee, of which he was a member, proposed a bill a few weeks ago that would require senators to make at least two thoughtful posts on this website per semester and those that did not would face censure. However during our Sunday night meeting the bill was amended by Joe Tarzi to only encourage senators to post and removed the threat of censure; the amended version of the bill passed.

I for one do not like being forced to do anything, even if it is something I would do anyway. If the government were to pass a law that required me to breathe I would be against it on principle, so as you might have guessed I was against requiring senators to post. During the course of my discussion with Nathan he postulated the initial incarnation of the bill failed because people are lazy and did not want to do more work. I pray that he is wrong. I know I didn’t vote against his version because I’m lazy or because I don’t think this website is important, it is just the principle. Maybe I’m naive in thinking this is the thinking of others too, maybe they are lazy. However, I would like to think that everyone on the SGA wants to be there. I want to believe that they are working hard to make this school a better place and will do what it takes to accomplish that goal because if a senator does not want to put in the effort they should simply resign and stop wasting my time and the time of the student body as a whole. This website is going to be the future of the SGA and as more people realize this, posts will come naturally.
