The SGA is currently looking for students who are interested in serving as full voting members on four very important and consequential committees.
If you are interested in serving as member on any of the follow three committees, please come to the SGA meeting this Sunday, September 21, 2008, at 7 pm in Hamlin Hall:
Campus Climate Committee (4 Students Needed)
The Campus Climate Committee is charged with designing and implementing strategies that improve the quality of community life and help to make the College a place where all members of the community feel welcome and able to contribute fully to the daily transactions of work, study and play. The committee identifies program ideas, allocates a budget to support good ideas from others, and recommends policy to the appropriate College officers. Examples of the committee’s work are the creation of the new Vernon Allen Houses, discussion forums, and new funding sources to support for spontaneous ideas that either enrich community life and/or explore important cultural issues. The committee includes staff, faculty, students and administrators. Candidates must be available on Fridays from 12pm to 1pm.
Planning and Budget Committee (2 Students Needed)
The PBC is the committee that makes recommendations to the college on how to spend money. The PBC hears proposals to, for example, hire a new faculty member, make infrastructure changes around campus, raise tuition, or raise faculty salaries, and then weighs the financial cost of said proposal with the benefits that said proposal would bring to campus. There are only two student spots and those students are the only students on campus who have a vote in the college’s financial decisions. Your vote on PBC matters is equal to the vote of every professor, staff member, or Dean that sit on that committee. It’s a big responsibility, but it’s also very rewarding. Students who want to sit on this committee should be open to the possibility of remaining on for more than one term, since it takes a little more than a semester to get the feel of things. Meetings are every Monday at 1pm.
Board of Trustees Student Forum Committee (3 Students Needed)
This committee will meet in advance of trustee weekend to discuss and determine topics for the student-trustee forum. Student representatives on this committee will also help to make decisions regarding student representation at the forums. They will work closely with Dean Alford, Chaplain Read, and a member of the Board of Trustees to provide a formal and productive forum that is valuable to both students and trustees.

Chartwells Subcommittee (2 Students Per Class Needed)
The SGA is looking for students interested in serving on our Chartwells Food Subcommittee. You’ll meet weekly in Mather Dining Hall on Fridays at 1 PM to discuss suggestions for improvement, etc. with the managers of Chartwells. We’re looking for two freshmen, two sophomores, two juniors, and two seniors. If you think you’d be good for the position and are willing to make the time commitment, send a brief statement to Rebecca.Herrigel@trincoll.edu by noon on Tuesday, September 23. The first meeting will be held on Friday, September 26.

The laundry room in Funston is currently not in operation. There is a problem with the circuits that supply the electricity to the machines. The school is working to resolve this problem quickly.
It has been brought to our attention that certain buildings in Area 2 have no hot water. We have been in contact with the Director of Facilities who has informed us that one of our boilers malfunctioned. The boiler is now back in service. However, It may take a few hours before hot water is returned to all buildings. We will keep you updated here with any further developments.
UPDATE: We have been notified about a typo that was made on the original election packets sent out via email. The due date of the packet was erroneously labeled as April 8th on the top of the packet. These packets can still be used and the problem has been corrected in the online version. Just note that the due date is as the original email correctly stated: 5pm Monday September 8.
The SGA elections will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2008. Class officers, SGA class senators and SGA budget committee members will be elected by each class. Elections are held online and an email ballot will be sent to you on the day of the elections.
The Fall 2008 election packet can be downloaded by clicking here. Anyone running for class officer or budget committee member will need 75 signatures and anyone running for class senator position will need 25 signatures. Election packets and the signatures must be turned into Mather Front Desk by 5:00pm on Monday, September 8, 2008.

The SGA is happy to inform you that the 24-hour areas of the library are being expanded. In fact, construction is currently underway and the new space is expected to open in the next few weeks.
The new space will be in addition to the original space and it includes the Michigami Meeting Room and the areas on the main floor where the reference desk and reference materials were located. It will also include the large area to the right of that main room (see attached map). The new area is carpeted and will have more tables, more computers, and some soft seating.
For the first couple weeks of classes we may have to put up with a little construction. But if you like what you see, tell the library staff because they are the ones who made this happen so quickly. If you have any questions or concerns please let us know.
It has come to my attention that the two new buses that we have special ordered for our new shuttle system will not arrive in time for the start of school. The good news is that we expect them to be delivered sometime during the first two weeks of classes. When I get a firm start date for the shuttle system I will let you know.

Over the summer we have been working with the administration to address some concerns regarding laundry service. When you return to campus, you will find several changes that either have been-or are in the process of being-implemented. Here is the not so good, the good, and the greener:
On behalf of the Student Government Association (SGA) I want to congratulate you on your decision to attend Trinity College. This must be an exciting time for you. Trinity is a great place to live and study. The truth is that you could not have picked a better time to attend Trinity College. You will be part of a time at the College that will surely make the history books.
Trinity is moving forward on many fronts. We continue to add to our list of phenomenal faculty. Our college programs are world-class with opportunities waiting at every corner. I know this is a busy time for you, but I want to point out that you are about to attend a college that is setting some impressive records, often capturing national and global attention. President Jones has set unprecedented financial goals for the College and, with his tireless leadership, we are well on our way to achieving them. Our Bantam baseball team went undefeated during the regular season this year and then went on to take the NCAA Division III National Title in May. These are only two of many examples.
While I am sure you are getting bombarded with information, I want to extend an invitation to you. I want to invite you to fully utilize the SGA, right from the start of your Trinity experience. Contact us for any reason as you make your transition to campus and as you start to enjoy the fruits of college life. We are completely student-run and are involved in all aspects of student life. Our primary goal is to represent and advocate for the student body. The problem is that the boiler in the basement of Jones has cracked. Maintenance crews have attempted to patch the boiler with only limited success. The boiler is currently not working and must be completely replaced. The school has brought in a temporary boiler (this is the large covered trailer currently outside of Jones) that should be up and running tonight. It would have been up and running earlier but installation crews have been experiencing difficulties. A new boiler is in transit and, with some luck, will be here tomorrow.
We will continue to stay in close contact with the Dean of Students and the Director of Facilities. If more information becomes available we will be posting it here.

The following letter was sent to all senators last night:
Fellow Senators,
I write to you this evening out of deep concern for the future of student life at our college. This Sunday we will make a decision that will affect SGA finances for the next 3 to 5 years. We will vote on cable, spending 600,000 to 1,000,000 in one day. As I currently serve on both of the main committees that control the Student Activities Fund, and I care deeply about this college and our organization, I feel that I should share my observations and concerns with you on this critical issue.
To understand the magnitude of this decision, please understand that the amount of money we will be approving to spend will be almost 1/3rd of the entire Student Activities Fund per year. Moreover, as we currently stand, we are completely out of money. The Budget Committee, on which I serve, has spent its 50,000 dollars for the semester (That’s right, we spend only 100,000 dollars a year from the budget committee on student activities out of a “Student Activities Account” that has almost 700,000 dollars annually). Remember, a sizeable amount of money does go to TCAC, but their budget is also less than this cable contract. From this point forward—and we are only halfway through the semester—requests to fund activities are being turned down.
