Ann Plato Fellow in Political Science and Human Rights
A graduate of Swarthmore College, Sonali Chakravarti received her Ph.D. from Yale in 2008. Her dissertation was entitled, “Anger, Resentment, Despair: On the Political Philosophy of Truth Commissions” and her research interests include transitional justice, critical theory, and the role of emotions in politics.
The Ann Plato Post-Doctoral One-Year Diversity Fellowship: The Ann Plato Fellow joins the faculty in one of 30 academic departments or interdisciplinary programs, interacting regularly with colleagues and students on campus, while working on their own research. Post-doctoral fellows teach two courses during the year. The fellowship is named for Ann Plato, a 19th-century author and teacher of African American and Native American descent, who lived and wrote in Hartford. She was the second woman of color in the United States to publish a book, and the first to publish a book of essays and poems (1841).
All are cordially invited to attend the lecture and reception immediately following.
As Spring elections are rapidly approaching, I would like to officially announce my candidacy for the position of SGA Vice President of Finance. I feel that I have the necessary experience and leadership skills for the role and would do a great job serving the student body. During my time with the SGA as a Senator-At-Large (going on 2 years now), I have been a Committee Chair, and thus on the organization’s Steering Board, and I have proven that I am capable of taking initiative, as well as working with my peers, to get things done. Most recently, I have served on the Budget Committee, which has allowed me to demonstrate that I am open-minded and will consider all expenditures, while at the same time remaining fiscally responsible. Overall, I am an organized, trustworthy person, and I hope to make the Student Activities Fund more transparent so that everyone knows where their money is going. If you have any questions for me, please do not hesitate to e-mail Krystal.Ramirez@trincoll.edu. Otherwise, I encourage you to support me for Vice President of Finance and vote on either Tuesday, April 7 or Wednesday, April 8!
Bothered by some of the things you hear around campus?
Looking for ways to respond or intervene?
If so, consider attending a Common Hour that will create dialogue around the effects of derogatory language on individuals as well as the campus community as a whole.
Today on the Trinity Exchange I noticed that Chartwells posted a link to a customer satisfaction survey: http://www.customsurveys.biz/Chartwells/2009/Spring/Trinity_College — I highly encourage everyone to use this opportunity to give feedback. The link will be open through March 13th.
Don’t forget to check your e-mail for the link to your online ballot! SGA winter elections begin at 2 PM on Tuesday, January 27 and end at 2 PM on Wednesday, January 28!
I just wanted to post requesting that anyone who notices that campaign materials (flyers, for instance) are being tampered with please report it to either Nathan Kirschbaum, SGA President, or Adam Katcher, Chair of the Elections, Recruitment & Communication Committee. I noticed some of my signs went mysteriously missing, although I affixed them to the inside of doors with a piece of tape on each corner… I would like to think it was simply a custodian who needed to clean the glass, but if you see anything (even if it is someone employed by Trinity who just seems to be doing their job), I urge you to notify those I mentioned above — I’m sure all candidates would appreciate it if their hard work didn’t suddenly vanish! Thank you!
Today, Trinity officially kicked off its first time ever participating in RecycleMania, a friendly ten-week recycling competition among fellow colleges and universities used to promote recycling on campuses! Each week throughout the competition we will report the total amount of paper, cardboard, bottles, and cans collected for recycling. At the end of the competition in March, we will be judged on the total amount of recycling per capita and compared to the other participating schools. If you have any questions, or if you would like to be more involved, I urge you to contact anyone on Trinity’s Recycling Task Force (I am a member) or Karen Misbach, Trinity’s Sustainability Coordinator. Also, as the competition progresses, you can follow our status at recyclemaniacs.org.
As I’m sure some of you have already noticed, we have a third Zipcar on campus, as promised! It’s a Mazda 3 sedan, and will be parked in the Campus Safety lot. One of the Matrix vehicles that was there previously will be moved to the Mather driveway for easier access to those on the south side of campus. To reserve any of these Zipcars, just go to www.zipcar.com/trinity. The cost is only $8 an hour or $65 per day! Hooray for car sharing!
Because Bryce Blum ‘10, current SGA Executive Vice President, is going abroad to Copenhagen, I would like to announce my candidacy for the position. I plan to run to fill the vacancy in the SGA’s Winter Elections, to take place in early February. I will begin my campaign activities when I return to campus in January. I hope to earn enough votes to win, obviously, because I feel that I have the necessary experience and leadership skills for the role. My entire time with the SGA as a Senator-at-Large, 1.5 years now, I have been a Committee Chair, and thus on the organization’s Steering Board, and I have proven that I am capable of taking initiative, as well as working with my peers, to get things done for the student body. If you have any questions for me, please do not hesitate to contact me at Krystal.Ramirez@trincoll.edu. Otherwise, I encourage you to consider me for Executive Vice President and vote on either Tuesday, January 27 or Wednesday, January 28!
Interested in participating in Trinity’s first-ever campus-wide squash tournament which also happens to benefit a good cause? Then register today for the First Annual ConnPIRG Campus Climate Challenge Squash Global Warming Tournament! It’s only $15 to play, and no experience is required! For more information, contact me, Bryce Blum, or Maggie Thomas!
After seeing the high student demand Trinity’s two Zipcars have gotten, we’re adding another one! This one will be conveniently located in Mather parking lot, and we expect it to be on campus by the time we get back from winter break. If you haven’t yet signed up for a Zipcar membership, go to www.zipcar.com/trinity — it’s only $35 to start, and that amount goes towards driving credit! Zipcar is wheels when you want them, at the rate of only $8 an hour or $65 per day! Give it a try!
Rebecca Herrigel ‘10, Peter Walters ‘11, Mark LaVoie ‘11, Lorenzo Sewanan ‘12, and I (Krystal Ramirez ‘10) have been hard at work. Here are a few bullet points about what we’ve accomplished thus far:
Acquired EnergyMisers (devices to make vending machines more efficient)
Passed a resolution in support of dormitory telephone service upgrades
Received a guarantee from the Director of Information Technology that at least 50% of dorms on campus will have wireless access by January 2009, and that the remainder will have access by September 2009
Had preliminary meetings with the Facilities Department to ascertain why students do not have access to dorms via their PACs
Have received progress updates from the Recycling Task Force
Have met weekly with the head of Chartwells dining services and made suggestions for improvement
Have met with the architects in charge of constructing the campus pub
Have begun looking into upgrades for dorm bathrooms and laundry rooms
